Freshly Squeezed Progress Report: A Nice Font Brings Everything Together

Last time, I reported that I had greatly improved the visuals of the title screen for my strategic leaf-raking business simulation game, Toytles: Leaf Raking.

I continued to make more enhancements.

Sprint 2026-MJ_20: Update title screen

Complete:

  • Find nicer font for main menu buttons
  • Find nicer font for headings/titles
  • Find nicer font for paragraph texts

Toytles: Leaf Raking title screen with new fonts

Early in the week I spent time looking into fonts that were playful yet still readable.

I needed a font for the buttons, a font for screen titles, and a font for paragraph text.

And I think it is amazing how much a few nice fonts bring everything together!

I then spent the remainder of the week designing and prototyping a new HUD for the in-game screens.

I came up with some straightforward, functional designs using the Kenney UI Pack. They looked better than what I have had for the past 10 years, but I found myself wishing I had an interface that was more playful as well.

So I experimented with some cardboard textures and overlays, and I’m pleased with some of the results. I’ll share more once I have something less prototype-y and more final.

After this work is finished, I will move on to other in-game UI enhancements.

Thanks for reading, and stay curious!
